If you are not employed (or not self employed), if you are not doing something useful to pay your own expenses (or do not manage your household responsibilities diligently, as a non-breadwinner) because you don’t want to, you are probably pretty good at making up excuses for why you cannot work, or why you cannot find work, “no matter how hard you try.”
You are really good at using real reasons that truly do prevent some people from finding gainful employment. But for you, they are only excuses, not legitimate reasons. The Bible warns you that you are not really getting away with your deception.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick/wicked; who can understand it? “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” (Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV)
If you can work and won’t, you are lazy. If you make excuses you are adding the sin of lying to your sin of laziness. Call me hateful if you wish, but you know full well whether you cannot work, or cannot be bothered to work.
“For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work, quietly, and to earn their own living. As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11, ESV)
Christian brother, Christian sister, I love you. If this is not you, please be at peace. If it is you, love is why I’m warning you.
